From Design and Technology …
Years 7 and 8 Project Week
Last week’s challenge for Year 7 and 8 was organised by the Design and Technology Department, with the theme being Design and Technology Bingo! We wanted to create a challenge that would be fun and exciting, and encompasses the different Design and Technology specialisms.
Please see the grid below to see what the students had to do. We are incredibly proud of the work that the Year 7 and 8 students produced, and we are sure you will agree with us that it looks like they had great fun!
As a department we have been overwhelmed by the full participation from the Year 7 and 8s, with many commenting how much they enjoyed completing the tasks. Many have been rewarded with Reward Points for excellent effort and outcomes. Perhaps families might enjoy attempting the Bingo Challenge as something to do over the summer together – have fun!

今年11桥接工作 for A Level 摄影
Year 11 摄影 A-level Bridging students have been working incredibly hard on their project ‘Aspects of Light’. I am highly impressed by their creativity and resourcefulness to create their own shoots with what they have at home. Some really excellent work.
From 意大利 …
Year 9 have been working on a unit in 意大利 to learn and talk about films. Here are three of the wonderful film reviews that have been written, about The Goldfinch, Romeo & Juliet and Pitch Perfect. Buona visione!
From 俄语 …
Year 7 俄语 Cultural project: June 22nd -26th
The Year 7 Russian culture project was to make a picture dictionary using a Russian food word for every (or very nearly every!) letter of the Cyrillic alphabet. The dictionary could be digital or paper and had to work in two ways: as a reference tool for the Russian alphabet and pronunciation and as an introduction to Russian food culture. Year 7 Russian did a marvellous job, showing excellent research skills and dedication to delightful presentation. Moreover they still remembered the 俄语 alphabet after three months of lockdown!
Year 8 俄语 Cultural project: June 22nd-26th
Year 8 Russian found out about key events and personalities in Soviet and Russian exploration of space, from the launch of ‘Sputnik’ in 1957 to the present day. They had also to provide a little 俄语 space vocabulary. The results of their research could be presented in a format of their choice, from power point to model rocket. Year 8’s work was individual and inspiring, showing true engagement in the theme, respect for detail and response to the magnitude of the world-changing achievements they described. Спасибо!
Work below by Daisy Reid, Rachel Harvey, Jessie Kay and Ada Fleming.
From RE …
In RE, Year 9 have been learning about the key beliefs and teachings of Buddhism, and how these apply to the issues of Prejudice and Discrimination in the world today. Here are a selection of posters and speeches inspired by the topic.
Year 7 Lock-down 学习 Challenge
Over the last week Mrs Fry challenged Year 7 students to share what they had learnt about themselves during lock-down. The entries were amazing. We have two joint winners – Sienna Akore and Bethany Botheras.
There are 3 runners up – Eva Gaston, Immy Moore and Bella Gray.
STEM Challenge – Solar Tower
On the 17th June 学生们 across KS3 were set invited to take part in the second STEM Challenge to build a solar tower and to get the pinwheel/propeller to spin as fast as possible.
There has been an amazing response from students, especially Year 7. The challenge became particularly difficult towards the end, as the weather conditions changed, leaving us with wind and rain rather than sunshine. Nefeli Tsamilli (7JC) has produced a fantastic poster explaining how a Solar Tower works.
The Challenge was judged on how many turns the propeller rotated in 60 seconds.
1st : Grace McMenamin
2nd : Gemma Archer
3rd : Martha Ker
4th : Olivia Baldwin
I highly recommend that you watch the video produced by Martha.
A massive well done everyone who took part in this challenge.
In the summer of 2019, two Presdales teams took part in projects at Free The Bears in Luang Prabang Laos as part of the community work aspect of our World Challenge trip. Whilst working there, we learned a lot about illegal wildlife trade and the need for wildlife conservation. Please check out an article we wrote discussing what we learned and our experience at Free The Bears.
Coincidentally, the BBC was there too filming a docuseries about these same issues. The two-part docuseries premieres on Wednesday 15 July at 8pm on BBC2. Check it out!
